Hungerford Road Young People Win Plus Dane's Fifth Annual Raft Race
Plus Dane's fifth instalment of the annual Raft Race event at Asbury Mere was hosted by the Cheshire Engagement Team and won by Team Hungerford Crewe.
The action packed event was a huge success aimed at promoting a range of positive activities to young people and families, with the Raft Races forming the main attraction of the event.
A range of Plus Dane tenants and youth providers from across our neighbourhoods in Cheshire East, Merseyside and Ellesmere Port & Neston gathered in vast numbers to participate in the races. In total, 12 teams took part, including a mixture of young people and families. Teams went against the stop watch to build and race the rafts around the mere, with the fastest 3 teams going into a final heat to battle it out for the crown.
Our young people from Hungerford road, Team Hungerford Crewe, put in a great performance and survived two tense heats to be crowned 2015 Raft Race Winners with an impressive time of 6min 11 secs. All teams were presented with medals and the top 3 were given trophies (and bragging rights). Overall the event was very successful and brought together many young people and families from diverse backgrounds and areas, with everyone having a whale of a time!
In addition to the Raft Races, there was a BBQ, Smoothie-making bikes, archery, climbing wall, boxing and taekwondo. Tenants also benefited from a range of stalls which were organised by HealthWatch Cheshire East, Tesco - who kindly donated 18 crates of water and fruit, Everybody Sport & Recreation Trust, Congleton PSCO’s and BikeAbility. The event was also supported by many local business and the local town council who all helped to amass over £1000 sponsorship.
Usman Ashiq, Health & Wellbeing Officer for Plus Dane commented: "it's been fantastic to see so many of our tenants taking part in a range of positive activities. As well all the fun aspects of the event, we had some key messages to promote to our tenants including team building, social & personal development of young people, engagement opportunities and the wellbeing of families. It was a great team effort from Emma Sneyd, Jennifer Priest, Tom Heyes, Colin Mountford, Rob Crisford and Neil Fox who helped to make the event a success."
