Flash-back Friday – One year on from completion at the Welsh Streets
Just over a year ago Plus Dane celebrated the completion of its flagship redevelopment of the Welsh Streets homes in Toxteth.
The extensive regeneration project brought properties back into use that were empty for many years, in a three-phase project in partnership with Liverpool City Council and Homes England.
Houses in Pengwern Street, Treborth Street, Gwydir Street, High Park Street and Kinmel Street were completely refurbished as part of a major £17m project to transform 127 existing terraced properties into 99 modern, contemporary affordable homes.
Customers returned to their homes – or moved to the neighbourhood for the first time – at each stage of the development, with the final happy customers getting the keys to their properties this time last year.
On completion day in 2022 our Chief Executive, Ian Reed, said:
“This has been an extraordinary redevelopment with many challenges along the way, so it is a proud day for us at Plus Dane to see this project completed and the difference it has made to the community. We have always been committed to supporting our communities in L8 and it is fantastic to see the Welsh Streets area fulfilling the potential it has always had, to be a desirable place to live.”
The completion of phase three in 2022 brought an end to a project that was decades in the making. Over five years the buildings were transformed into a mix of two, three and four bedroom homes, all sensitively restored, and providing a high standard of modern energy efficiency.
The ambitious project was delivered in collaboration with a range of partners and stakeholders, including Liverpool City Council, Homes England, Penny Lane Builders, Markhams, and the Halsall Lloyd Partnership.
Local people were recruited on to the project too as part of a commitment from Plus Dane and partners to create meaningful work and training opportunities, including jobs and apprenticeships.
