Tiber is a registered charity in Liverpool 8, that aims to help young people achieve their goals and get the best out of life.
At the end of 2023, Plus Dane supported the Tiber Young People’s Steering Group to go on a fact-finding mission to the Migrateful Cookery School in London to look at their enterprise and training model. For many of the group this was their first trip to the capital.
The Tiber delegation wanted to find out about how the cookery school operates. Its students are all refugees, migrants and asylum seekers who receive training to help them gain qualifications to enter the workforce.
The group worked with a Ghanaian chef to get a real understanding of how the Migrateful sessions are delivered, working in pairs to make a chicken stew with plantain and yam.
One of the young people from Tiber said: “Some of us had zero cooking skills, some had done a bit or watched family members cook something similar, so it was a challenge.
“We all prepared our own meals in pairs and I was surprised myself how good everyone had done cooking for the first time, they had really put an effort in but also had a laugh. After cooking the meal, we all sat down at a big table together along with trainers and staff and ate together, which was a great feeling.”
Based on their visit to Migrateful, back home the Tiber group debated whether a similar project would work at their Football Centre off Lodge Lane. They are now exploring their options to provide a kitchen to show young people to learn how to cook, manage their food income and eat healthily, with the possibility of working with international chefs to gain basic qualifications.
Emma Sneyd, Plus Dane’s Head of Social Impact said: “We are pleased that we were able to support the Tiber to explore possible routes into employment for the young people of Liverpool, and hopefully we have helped in a small way to create some budding chefs of the future. It would be great to see the Tiber develop a similar model that can reach the diverse needs of the local community and provide skills for the future.”
